Fade the Blog is sorted at long last. Thank non-existent deities for small mercies. In the meanwhile I'm sat in front of 'Boys and Girls' which it must be said is marginally funny. Just glad that I'm back on top of the serious blog.

Saturday Night Doom and Gloom

As ever Saturday night TV is bloody terrible. Casualty offers doom and gloom on a large scale. Planning on hitting the DVDs to find something worth watching. Mind you plan on getting to that after take 2 of the news blog. Feel a little more positive by now, probably as a result of not losing as much as I put on the National. Tomorrow Cal goes to the first party of a school friend out of school he's been to. So tomorrow he goes to the Chapel Brook to Stephanie's party. Apparently only the boys are going which suits Stephanie because she's a tomboy. Her Mum's a midwife by trade, NHS get everywhere...

Annual Punt

The National today so the family's annual punt happens. Walking Through Treacle

Feel like it's going to be a day walking through treacle, just don't seem to have any get up and go, it's got up and gone. Just Lost an hours worth of Fade the Blog through my own stupidity, didn't trust my distrust. Can't be arsed retrieving it at the moment, may try again later in the day when I feel more up to it, probably once I've got Cal to bed. Just going to plug myself into some music, take out some rage on the lawns and sup bad coffee. Mind you it don't help that I've got the last Teardrops E.P. playing and that just plugs me into a shit time.

Takeaway to Be Delivered

Too knackered to cook, too knackered to go out, so the solution, get the takeaway to come to you. Lazy but hell it's Friday and I've had a heavy week. Interesting call from the StHA around them wanting a price for a service based around training and the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Interesting area for us to go in I guess. Need to think about it but too tired to think. Might wake up later after food and a bit of a lie down.

PCT Librarians

I love this group, partly because it's an excuse to catch up with the latest goss, partly because I think it's a group of librarian's that are inventive about what they do because they have no option but to be inventive because PCT's are new to us all. Looks like it could really drive the whole marketing agenda forward, which is really cool. Back to Liverpool and home via the Rapidly Diminishing Ken Clare's. Good company, good conversation and the whole thing makes more sense. Meanwhile at home Cally was having a good time playing with his wee friend Rachel from school. First time we've had a school friend round so that was cool. Word is he won second prize in the easter bonnet competition with his top hat as made by Monst and modelled by Cal. Knackered, need to wash up feed Katie the cat and then I'm away to bed.

Feel a total pimp wittering on about procurement, just confirmed the alert button appears under NeLH but not Aditus logins, why? Gearing up for PCT Librarians today, having to be clever at this hour in the morning is hard. Thankfully having woken up with a bit of Flogging Molly the lovely Amelia Fletcher is seranading me now. Which reminds me Cathy Rogers is back on TV Sunday with 'Full Metal Challenge' in which 'Twenty-seven teams from five continents compete in a unique and fearsome battle for automotive supremacy. Of these, nine are British, nine are North American and nine are international teams. The international teams are from China, Russia, India, Germany, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland and South Africa. Given a budget of �2000 ($3000), teams have been given one month to build their ultimate dream machine. A set of guidelines should form a basis for their vehicle design; over and above this, their creativity is limitless. These monstrous machines have to be capable of incredible feats of endurance and speed. They must out-smart and out-manoeuvre the competition � all of whom are hungry for victory. The impressive location for Full Metal Challenge is a disused power station in Kent. The power station has been completely transformed to house a series of hair-raising circuits, designed to push man (or woman) and machine to the limit.' Hopefully very like Scrapheap Challenge in tone but either way it'll be good to see Cathy on screen again. Needless to say it'll form a staple of Sunday evening viewing for Cal and myself.

Half Time Score

0-0 at half time. Been to Sainsbury's and met Cal's fave babe (his teacher). Key mission for me, to retrieve ginger and bog roll, the stuff of life I guess. Got told that today Cal drew his first picture of a person involving head, legs, arms, eyes and mouth. Lots of progress being made by Cal, well chuffed at it. Good points collection on cakes in preparation for Rachel's visit tomorrow. Mr. Kipling sir, you are a scholar and a gentleman. Tidying going nowhere, football and shopping have stopped play. Need to sort the kitchen soon, but again I'm as energetic as a sloth on valium.

Hope Sam's Wearing Her Rooney Shoes

Sven's picked Wayne Rooney from the start against Turkey. A brave choice, just hope Sam Howlins got her Rooney trainers on and they work... My bad IT day seems to have gone away, but only as far as everyone else in libraries in North Mersey. Nice chat with Steve Graham who cheered me up, less so with Ashworth and Ormskirk. Worrying chat with Steve Malloy at the Wimmins (went to pick up some cataloguing to make amends for destroying the library), he doesn't seem to understand the nature of client/server. Still it'll eventually sink in... Quick tidy up round ours tonight, Cal has a school friend and her Mum coming round tomorrow to play. Don't feel like it I'm knackered and need an early start to explain the premises behind my costings of our service at PCT librarians tomorrow. On the plus side I've promised to take Mic for a pint and it'll be nice to catch up. Might see if I can spring Emma too.

Current Awareness aka National Procurement IV

Now have my response-o-matic current awareness form sorted. Should any UK Health librarians wish to have a copy to run with a zetoc based CAS service and their intranet site, end up reading this, if they mail me I'll send a copy. It was a bit of a slog getting it together. Lists by subject area national procurement e-journals and our hard copy journals and I'll start touting it round the PCT today.

Parents Evening

Went to Cal's parents evening today, felt a complete fraud convinced that these things are for parents and not me (yes I know I am a parent but it's like whenever someone calls me Mr. I turn round and look for my Dad). Went well and Cal got a glowing report. Was well impressed. Must be one of the more grown up things I've done in my life!

Interesting, my whinge about the necessity of NHSnet to access the resources is rubbish, through my NeLH athens password I have full access. Does this mean a simple administrative change in the North West's access rights would rectify the situation? If so it can't happen soon enough.

Intranet Bloos

Ooops! think I've upset Lynne with the stuff in South round clinical governance. Need to chat it through with Ken. Trouble is I kinda think that intranets shouldn't be pretty model websites but if they're working properly should be a place where exchange of ideas and data is routine. Mind you I'm notoriously anarchic about the way I think about information. Maybe the key thing is some sensible content management system rather than a set of static pages, something that empowers end users to put the content together in a way they can't damage anything. Maybe the whole notion of a web developer is the wrong job title maybe it should be web enabler, but then this is me pre-empting a chat with Ken (sorry boy if you read this, but I'm still trying to get my head round this and I hate feeling I've upset Lynne who I like lots).

Having been timed out on a search earlier I'm now taking a far more wary approach to cross database searching. Gone are the cavalier searches and in with the careful on step at a time jobs. It's less likely to die on me this way. As a tactic it seems to be working. Still a problem with downloading searches over 20 items though, but that's probably me being stoopid.... De-duplication is still a good thing, except I've found a dupe.....

Post Meeting Homesick Blues

Good meeting, need to touch base with Lynne Stephens because it means a marginal tweak for the intranet. Interesting notion of CAS attrition raised. I have a little sympathy but bottom line is we're damned if we do and damned if we don't. Maybe users need educating in terms of what they can cope with as well. May look at a weekly digest of Fade the Blog. Mind you I fear the result is an unfeasibly long file that people will whinge about still. Anyway meant I was this side of town so straight home and into the final stages of getting my CAS stuff ready for the launch of National Procurement tomorrow. On the downside we lose access to the complete range of BMJ journals. A big pity and I'll miss them. Good to see a comment on the blog from the Rapidly Diminishing Ken Clare who's blog I for one miss at the moment.

Technology You Foul Beast

Why do computers know when you're working to a tight schedule and need to run like a loon? They always give you grief at the worst possible moment. On the budget side our missing dosh has turned up, in Liverpool HA's account. Sorted. Quick note before I dash to the Matchworks for a meeting with Maurice Smith, guru of clinical governance. Should be quite cool.......

Bitter and Twisted

Move on to Harviestoun's Bitter and Twisted which is a little more entertaining than it sounds. Need to do some bits of gubbins around strategy for work and stuff but I currently have the energy level of a sloth on valium. Plan on an early start, it's possible because I got my shit together earlier and ironed my stuff for the morning and Cal's school uniform too. This is unusually organised for me, but what the hell it makes a pleasant change. An early start won't do me any harm either. Arsenal Ladies lost the cup final against Fulham on penalties, not often you can say that.

As predicted the rugby did nothing for me and I fell asleep infront of it. England won so I suppose that's OK. In the meanwhile set the video for Killing Hitler on Beeb 2 and planning to watch 'Sexy Beast' on Channel 4. Sat here with a bottle of Woods' Hopping Mad, which is very nice indeed. Help, rented 'Lilo and Stitch' yesterday and Cal is showing a marked liking for Elvis. Now I read once a stat that a quarter of the world's population are currently Elvis impersonators, just hope that they ain't going to start to invade this gaff. Sounds that there may be a need for a bunch of Elvis to hit my stereo and that's not my kind of vibe at all. Weather is good so been attacking the garden, weeds tremble once again where they'd recovered from my last assault. Planning on threatening the laughingly named lawn again too, while I've got dry weather. Footy last night was crap, 2-0 against the might of Lichtenstein, what a victory.

Yes another rediculous festival force on the planet by greedy greetings card manufacturers that will be observed in this house by the lazing in bed til a rediculous hour, delivery of card written by Callum and probably by providing breakfast in bed.
