Trains, Boxes and Wickets

Thursday

Budget meeting with Emma our new finance person, tutored by Eilleen our old finance person. Apparently we're quite simple to deal with. This is good it means over a companionable cup of char I flog the library to Emma. Usual story, didn't realise we are here and what we can do for the young studying finance person. Of course it ain't the first time we've told them and probably won't be the last. Marketing, eh! It's like banging your head against a brick wall but without the sense that you can get relief by stopping it!

Lunch is taken at the Marina in celebration of Christmas, Solstice take yer pick. OK devastating confession time, I'm missing the ability to be grumpy about Christmas, there hasn't been a Christmas outbreak at work yet. Is this lack of Sally and Christina providing Christmas critical mass for me to be grumpy about. Anyway the meal was pleasant, good comapny apart from me helps. Gonna nick the idea of the beetroot and feta tartlet at some point because it was good.

Home and Monst is suffering in tems of not feeling well, the result is two meals to cook. I then promptly fall asleep in the living room and when I wake get told I've been snoring like a pig and head upstairs at about 8.30 'ish, there are fringe benefits to this.

Friday

The benefits prove to be a rediculously early rise which lets me get the news done, sort out the blog that feeds Talkr to generate the podcast which I haven't talked about here yet. Finally found a service that automates the creation of podcasts that will work at work as well as home. The notion is that busy NHS managers might like to have our news current awareness service read at them. So a robotic American voice now does this. Don't know if anyone'll use it but what the hell it's a couple of rigid digits waved as usual! The automation is critical, my read it yourself experiment was too time consuming for repetition, this is at least simple to cope with. Anyway the feed address for it is http://www.talkr.com/app/cast_pods.app?feed_id=24421 so bung that in yer aggregator if you dare!

A more dubious benefit is the ability to listen to the cricket. Yesterday England had a good day, a reason for jubilation all round, today it is a bad day, the whole thing is fairly typical and only to be expected. Right now miss Dave being about the place to grumble about this state of affiars with. Cricket over Christmas won't be the same in the library without him about too.

A return to the Blackhole of Gateway House, which I discover from one of the boxes I'm listing is also alarmingly referred to as the Dead Room. Not found any stiffs yet... but still looking. Fondly hoping it'll turn into an episode of Inspector Moose! Getting used to the commute to the Land of Manc, train, coffee, scrabbling around on gruby floors recording records that nobody cares about (or so I think but I witness some being used today!) The Good news is I'll be almost sorted by the end of today apart form the odd box and the loose files. Ask Tracy to book me tickets for next week where I have the luxury of an empty diary (a reason to be thankful for Soltice season?)

Recharge time comes and I hit the web cafe at the Merchants Hotel for the purposes of this posting. Machines are empty, requires a buzz to get in and I'm not certain I'd want to spend the night here but for web access at £150 an hour it'll do.

Ying and Yang or Three Halves of a Single Day

Reggie beckons and there is a coffee waiting on me provided by a very kind Tracy. Dig in finish the news and get it out. FoI comes to visit, having spent a week trying to talk to anyone at Gateway the batphone goes into overdrive and they're all chasing me! Alarming...... This disturbs my preparation for Thursday when I'm off to join the Moss Troopers up in Carlisle. Not ready so need to nip in Thursday morning to sort that. Nicola when you read this I forgot to thank you for your help with the packs but it was much appreciated.

Next stop is Croxteth Communiversity and a gig with the new Health Trainers as recommended by the last public health white paper. The gig is for a woman who made me wince with tales of the use of sellotape in the absence of a sports bra (empathy in this case is a bad thing - but it did make me laugh like a drain too!) Really nice bunch and far from the rejects from a PE department that I imagined when I read of the notion first in the white paper these are people who will make a difference. See lots of good public health folk there too. Fun, I enjoy it and I've grabbed a good set of books to demo, I loan a couple while I'm up there..... top stuff. Then back to Reggie for a quick 30 minutes.

Then hoof it to the School for an interim review meeting. Cal is now leaving the Speech and Language Unit, perfectly reasonable meeting, poor Monst gets a little upset but we see a way forward. Not impressed with the support in identifying where we go next though and this puts a downer on the end of the day.... Throw into the mix a call with a well meaning Kaushall who don't wanna listen....

Shit continues as Arsenal lose in Moscow, but Cal has a date with Investiture at Beavers so that's a positive I suppose!

To do:

  • Get Monst and Cal to Airport
  • Ring Colin B in the land of Manc
  • Ring Jean Re: Call Above
  • Catalogue
  • Chat to Tracy first thing
  • Sort BL ILLs
  • Sort the Cavity Wall Installers
  • Sort the Sky Installer
  • Feed myself

Inhuman Resources

Stoopidy miserable today, apologies to the folk at work. With Sally's news I have the delights of contacting HR. Go in via someone I know which at least gets me past three stupid hurdles, they put me onto the person in recruitment who details the current employment situation. For us to recruit things have to go to an at risk register - fair enough, then if nobody comes forward they go to internal advert, then if nobody comes forward they go onto NHS jobs. Add to that I am informed I need a the vacancy signed off by the Assistant Chief Executive. Now is there a simple pack that involves form etc. that would be helpful that HR dish out? Is there buggery, so then send an email to the Assistant Chief Exec to ask how the hell do I get the vacancy approved and lo a form is sent my way by her PA who at least is on the ball. Ring her, check a few details like, 'What's all this about counter-signatures?' Still that's better than the 'What's with this counter-signature bollocks?' which is the real question. Arrange with Pete the relevant sig, get some top tips from him and support (nice to have) and submit the filled in form. This all takes the best part of the day. Still following the Inhuman Resources timetable I'll be lucky to be in a position to recruit in 6 weeks let alone before I trip to New Zealand. Throw in some scanning from the 100 box experience and me being a grumpy git, the weather being hot, the fact that the air conditioning seems to do very little..... Grump city or what. Actually I will admit to approving of the concept of the vacancy control form but why make it so hard to find (at least put it on the intranet - ooops should that not be make the intranet navigable.....)

Throw in the additional thing I need to sort out, the delightful payroll who are apparently up the wall because they've moved and aren't gonna be near a phone 'til tomorrow.......... Aaaargh!

Home and I fling some charcoal on the barbeque and prepare to cremate some chicken. Meanwhile we live in a no TV zone as we all suffer for the boys lack of application with his homework over the weekend. So, early bed times for him (at which point I can watch the machine that deliveres chewing gum for the eyes) and silence in the house until I sneak upstairs and shove some tunes on.....
