Little Shop of Horrors

Thursday my head says flake out, the facts say get ready to pick the family up from their day trip to the Isle of Man. Monst calls to warn me they're running late. Great, I'm knackered and likely to be more so before the evening is out. TV horror tonight. Difficult to entertain myself. Do a little work. Try not to kip.

Errr.... apologies in advance

7 deadly sins of book covers in the health environment:

  • Do not put a picture of a cheery GP with a stethescope round his neck, a switched on PC and a pen in his hand and an unfeasibly clean desk on a cover, it'll only make me want to strangle the bastard with the aforementioned stehtascope for being smug when I've been cataloguing the book he's having his 15 minutes on.
  • Do not use the word modern, modernisation or recent in the title, it instantly dates the book in question no matter how fresh it is.
  • Using the word simple anywhere in a title indicates either I'm a fuckwit or alternatively the book is going to be bloody complex.
  • Too much blue on the cover, it might be an NHS corporate colour but it is dull, boring and Arsenal never win anything when they use the colour as a major part of any kit.
  • Have pictures of sliced brain, it ain't pretty and it ain't clever....
  • Name an author that you are aware of academically who insists on putting all of their own books on their reading lists, it only leads me to utter the word tosser or a slightly ruder version on sight.
  • Use decorative fonts OK other things winding me up right now, the geezer on the phone who offers some grey lit to be put in the library and then says 'You can't just dish it out, you'll have to keep track of who has it', hello this is a library........... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarghhhh!

    Fursty Ferret

Fursty Ferret for a Fursty Froat. Beer is welcome. Day spent getting some cataloguing in. Sort my weekly target plus 3 as a bonus. Anything else is a freebie now. Shortlisting for Trainee Library Assistant post. Much support from Tracy and Sally, appreciated. Not good fun, always feel like a bastard when doing that sort of thing and interviews will make me feel more evil still. Old mail to blog messages continue to appear and need deleting. Clean up blog. Grief over webbing up of Heritage, need to explain to David. Not happy with progress, me I'm not happy with progress but that's life. Need to chase it up. Thing is I have no dedicated time for this sort of stuff. I have to fit in with other stuff and at the moment it's just another thing to think about. That being said I've had a weekly chase for the last month.

The Public Lending Right: Court cases involving Italy and Luxembourg

The European Commission has decided to refer Italy and Luxembourg to the European Court of Justice for failure to implement fully into national legislation the “public lending right” provided for by a 1992 Directive. By introducing a public lending right” the EU is aiming to ensure that creative effort is protected and encouraged throughout the European Union. In a related development, the Commission has also launched infringement proceedings against Belgium, Finland and Sweden because these Member States have not complied with the 2004 rulings of the Court requiring them to implement the 2001 Copyright Directive (see IP/01/528). Should they continue in not complying with the Copyright Directive, the Commission, after issuing a “reasoned opinion” formally requesting them to do so, may ultimately ask the Court for fines to be imposed on these Member States.

    Scans, Rhinos, Vomit

Friday Cal goes for an MRI scan at Alder Hey. Ted bear has one too for good measure. It's all to do with a marginal tremor he has. Me, I get to drop them off at the hospital and then return home to tidy the house. Deep joy. By about 12 I get the call to fetch them then receive a bollocking because the car doesn't act like a teleport and instantly arrive. This augers well for the trip to Coatbridge. Luckily things calm down and the journey north is uneventful apart from a quantity of back seat driving and the fact that I end up being forced to listen to the bloody Carpenters and a CD of 100 nursery rhymes which only serves to remind me how violent the things are. Coatbridge is a relief as it hoves into view. Feed, and instantly wanna kip. Cal meanwhile is busy playing with Ashleigh and making an unholy din. Saturday Cal calls up the Bagpuss clause and he and Ashleigh get down to some serious play. Monst is kinda OK about being woken up, Kitty goes into denial and occaisional groans come from her room. I meanwhile locate coffee and try to wake up. Plan is a trip out for the day. By 10 Kitty surfaces, Davie (my ex almost brother in law comes round and it's nice to see him) by 11 Edwina her mate is round demanding tea and by 12 we head off to Edinburgh Zoo. Me, I'm stressed because I have a car full of back seat drivers, that insist on singing nursery rhymes and I want to listen to some real music. Much muttering about the Death Disco Ltd CD I shove on. I'm also stressed because I know we have to be in Chryston at 5.30 to pick up Monst's Aunt Margaret to take her to a fun pub for dinner. Animals at the zoo are fun to see though and I begin to chill out a little. The weather is nice, Auld Reekie looks hazy and Cal amuses me mightily when he declares to the world and his wife that he 'likes the smell of rhino pooh'. We leave the zoo at half five. Stressed. Drive back is over the speed limit we make Chryston at 6.00 and the fun pub is far from fun, it's grim but has a play area for the kids. I'm drinking coke and eating a bland meal of lamb suet pudding. Still it's food and welcome. Home via the video library and I fall asleep to 'Home on the Range'. In the process I miss everyone going to bed and Cal waking up and hurling everywhere. Sunday The day of Ashleigh's birthday party. A nice dalmation themed birthday cake. Cal isn't well but is excited by the prospect of the party. Drag family, attendent helpers over to the Time Capsule then head back to Kitty's to sort out a web account for her and watch the stew. Nice side effect is I don't have to go to the party. Sort it all out. Head at 6.00'ish and journey back is through retreating Rangers fans celebrating their win in the jockish league cup over Motherwell. See one load of Motherwell fans (me I vote 'Well on the basis of a good afternoon their if cold watching frankly apalling football in the SPL as they played Livingstone - plus none of the sectarianism of Rangers). The Douglas Covenanters Rangers Supporters Club reminds me that the blue noses of Glasgow have either a very dry sense of humour (presumably dried in the flames of the Catholics they wanna burn) or are just a bunch of fanatic bigots. I know the latter is not in most cases true but they don't help themselves. Home, and bed.
