Internal Debates

Cal drags me to the dreadful Fantastic 4 and the Rise of the Silver Surfer. His type of movie, Monst's excuse for not being there is that she is sleeping having worked last night. Lucky cow! We go bowling afterwards and I trounce the boy!

Drop Monst at work and repair home via Ols Swan's Monster Big Tesco's. This on the basis I was expecting monster big beer selection, I was disappointed but bumped into Helen along the way. Nice to see her.

Back and Cal plays the Fifa 04 we grabbed at Morrison's earlier dead cheap (its so out of date). Brings the aforementioned internal dilemmas. Who's gonna be the Arsenal. I defer to the boy. He trounces Spurs (with a little help - they go two up and I can't bring myself to see them win so three quick own goals later and things are sorted!) and genuinly beats Reading. Daft!

Deadwood Stages and Washing Machine Wrestling

Finally crack the washing machine following having employed the advice from Washer Help and retrieve my clothes. Just now need to drag them to the bagwash tomorrow. Also means the disconnecting of the beastie on Friday should be a doddle.

Follow Monst's traditional wish for steak pie by preparing the steak by boiling the crap out of it. Slip in a bit of Broadside (gives me an excuse to drink the rest!) Nip to the bottle bank at Sainsbury's because the one at Not Tommy's (he sold out and even then it wasn't called Tommy's) is behind a 6 ft spiky fence.

Listen to a bit of Paul Roland along the way and end up watching 'Calamity Jane' the origin of my fave health campaign from the Armistead Project 'Whip Clap Away'. Feed the boy on pizza.

The Black Hit of Space

New Year's Eve brings it's usual round of Monst going into work, gloom and mayhem on Casualty on Beeb 1 that I do my best to avoid, nostalgia TV on Beeb 2 with a look as Saturday Morning kids TV through the eyes of the Multicoloured Swap Shop (which I do look in on) and bugger all else I wanna watch right now. Really nothing I wanna watch right now so take the opportunity to label unlabelled tracks on the Notpod. Listen to some guilty pleasures as I do so (believe me some of them are more guilty than you will ever know - yes Shan if you read that you can play guessing games!) Mind you I ain't certain that listening to the Fun Boy Three is the best way to cheer yourself up. Gonna fetch some Brakspears Organic to sup. While I'm on a nostalgia kick I might as well drink a beer in exile! None of Ken's sobriety here! (That's not to disparage it either, I just don't do life without a beer, tried to give up alcohol one Lent and lasted three days dry - mind you going to the pub each day didn't help!)

Now I know what happened to Emu when Rod Hull finaly karked it playing TV Arial Mr Fix-It, Amy Winehouse turned the poor bugger into a dress. Didn't stop a fine performance of 'Monkey Man' though. Hootenanny as ever provides a nice mix of music and while some leaves me a little cold in the main it is good stuff.

The folks call me from Norway to wish me a happy Norwegian New Year, ever impatient as a nation they have the thing in advance of us, just like Christmas. They seem to be having better weather than is forecast here. The swine.....

Cal eventually falls a-kip. I just relax and sup beer. So anyway, Happy New Year One and All, hopefully it'll be a good one with lots more peace than the last one.

Kitchen Bondage Part III

The food is under control, I've threatened some sausages with bacon, manufactured chestnut stuffing and pork and sage and onion. The carrots and sprouts have met Mack the Knife and I'm now waiting on the timer to tell me it's time to shove them on. Unspeakable acts of desecration have also been performed on the backside of the goose to ensure the thing comes out moist and good. At least I hope it will.

The plus side of all of this is that I have time, I tune into 6 Music (which as ever offers an eclectic mix of sounds which is all to the good), grab a bath, read a goodly portion of 'A dysfunctional success' and raise a couple of glasses of pre-dinner sherry in the memory of my maybe Fanny Craddock piss-taking Grandfather. It all has to be done. It's the rules. Also sup a bottle of Waggle Dance.

Monst meanwhile takes a well earned kip having witnessed the boy open his presents. He meanwhile soothes his inner dragon with Spyro on the playstation. Me though, I wanna kip but need to keep going at least until after we eat.

Farewell James Brown, really don't know how I've resisted some mash-up of Sex Machine and 'The Fear of Fanny' from last night as a title..... be grateful I have though!

Splash Down

First off Happy Birthday to Sally. Positive vibes her way.

We visit Mattie in Cardonald in the morning, a regular receiver of the mock Cal postcards I scrawl while on holiday. Good to see her and she endures the New Zealand photo experience with good humour and grace. Cal in the meantime merrily beats me up and plays with another flurry of penguins that have come his way courtesy of Burger King yesterday and Mattie today.

Back to Coatbridge and lunch with Kitty. Quick tour of duty in the kitchen washing up and waiting the requisite time before heading to the 'Time Capsule'. Swindon's Oasis has been moved and given a prehistoric makeover with an ice rink surgically attached. Fun had by all and free massage for me courtesy of the waterfall and many a flume for the boy and the girl.

Buy beer not for the journey (that'd be silly) but for the post journey chill out. Summat to do with Merlin and Mary Queen of Scots. I've learnt over the years that no matter how tired I am having driven a reasonable distance, sleep is hard to come by. Not a problem tonight because if it goes completely horrible there is always the cricket to listen to. I do know that I'm likely to be quite uptight by the time I'm home because the weather is foul.

Wet, Wild and Glasgae

How do you cheer up a shopping trip to Glasgow? Easy, discover a three - nil win against Spurs. This discovered while waiting outside a heaving Boots cheered Cal and myself up mightily. To be honest though the shopping trip really wasn't that painful. One Denby dinner service later and a fine set of pans and things are sorted. That's before the quest for red coat for Callum. No joy because of the boy's insistence on red, despite Monst finding something that was good in grey. Glasgow was heaving as the big Chrimbo shopathon rumbles into life.

Then we go to see 'Happy Feet'. Cal enjoyed it so that was fine. Not certain it had the biggest plot on the planet but the animation was mightily impressive.

I escape CSI and head to the pub for a pint. Discover it's karaoke night and not wishing to reprise the 'Blockbuster' experience, I flee the pub and return to the dog end of CSI - deep joy!

Jacobite at Heart

Start closing in on the ton of e-books catalogued. Easiest way to look at them is with the quick clicks in Liberty. Not perhaps the best way to spend your wedding anniversary but I get a perverse sense of achievement out of it. Poor Monst is still hobbled by bad knee. We fetch a variety of store catalogues for her to plan her Chrimbo assault on the shops, but other than that do very little.

The Wintersmith is good. Read it, cookfor the folks and later find myself pissed in charge of a Library Management System! The White Horse Bitter, Wychcraft and the fact I'm knackered are to blame. Ears listen to Nikki Sudden. Tis good stuff, that'll be him on the left there by the way!

Arsenal draw Liverpool in the Carling Cup, hmm... methinks a ticket may be required. Need to check the date.

Ooops, Beer of the Pathway!

Friday

Say a fond farewell to Dave who comes in to produce another issue of Vanity Project on the Photocopier. Good to see him, good to hear the new job begins in the smoke on Monday. Positive vibes that direction. Helen comes into see us. Strangest event is writing an appendix for an independent inquiry that I wasn't expecting to write. Other news is FUBAR NHS strikes again as late in the day I get a visit from someone wanting to brush their skills up in anticipation of the need to look for gainful employment elsewhere. Fine and dandy but the person concerned will be a loss to the Trust, again we lose good people as a result of reform and not because we should lose them but because they are being frustrated and their talents aren't being utilised.

Home and I get sent out for ginger and come across some bottles of White Horse Bitter from the White Horse Brewery. Grab a couple of bottles of a taste from home. How times have advanced when you can find real beer from home up Norf!

Saturday

Dates to me are things that appear magically on a page, or I read but don't pay a huge amount of attention to when I dust off the history books but not today. Today is the 4th November and I'm on a mission. Today is the day to buy the tickets for Cal's first foray into footie. A quick online sesh shows me I'm up too early for Everton but later in the morning (about one coffee into the day with thoughts of brewing another rattling round my head) and the site is ready to do business. Result we have tickets for the Everton v Arsenal Carling Cup game on Wednesday. Callum is suitably excited!

News from Scotland is that Margaret has unfortunately died this morning. Although not unexpected it ain't exactly good news.

Other than this the day just cruises by with a shop at Sainsury's the viewing of various bits of recorded programs, some light reading and Monst drafting a letter to a school on behalf of the boy. I just tidy it up a little but the content is Monst's.

Big Smash!

Wreckless Eric plays to me as I try and work out if sleep is gonna visit me soon or not (I just love the pop art cover). Usual Sunday night then, view Laurence on 'I'm With Stupid', sup Riggwelter and enjoy a desultory read of 'Blitzkrieg' and I'm relaxed. Nice.....

Travel Woes and Catching Up

OK so the Blackberry kind of dies on me, I assualt it with a paper clip to no avail. Maybe it's an issue back home. So blogging is likely to be sparodic and based on net cafes for a bit. Apologies. So to catch up.

Rotorua or Hot It's the Trots

Sulpher City and it smells of rotten eggs. With my notoriously insensitive hooter its fine, I notice the smell but it doesn't exactly over power me. Some muttering from Monst and Cal though. See sometimes it pays to have an insensitive sense organ.

First night in town we crash, except my stomach is suffering, and as the blackberry at this stage was behaving mails fly back and forth to blighty. Tracy if you read this can you get a message to Jon Dailey at the Heaf', Cathy Stuart at Gateway House and Frank Andrews at Preston that we need their collated LDP returns for a geezer called Stuart Jeffrey.

Morning and I've hardly slept a wink but what the heck we're on holiday and Monst decides to ease us into the day, so post breakfast we hit a spa that uses geothermally heated water and Cal and I swim in a pool naturally heated to just below a bath temperature. Odd but relaxing. Monst meanwhile heads for a massage.

Next stop old culture vulture me drags the folks to Te Wairoa a buried vilage the result of an eruption in 1886. It's sort of a polite Pompeii (well it involves the Victorians so prudish they reputedly covered up the legs of the piano, while at the same time having an estimated 100,000 prostitutes avaialbel in the UK alone!). Fascinating as it illustrates both Maori and European life together at a single moment in time. We grab lunch there and I eat but sparingly.

Post lunch it's off to Whakarewarewa because I insist we see some geothermal action. Our guide round the village is local of somewhat advancing years with an extremely young attitude Chris. She is what Monst describes as a character as she tells us the geothermal action predicts the weather, volcanic events in the Northern Hemisphere, in fact just about everything apart from next weeks lottery numbers. The village itself is fascinating too, the deal with the Chief who turned it over to tourism was he wanted flush toilets in return for allowing various strangers to wander in. Fair deal. The houses are small because there are a set of geothermal baths so no need for bathrooms and the cooking can be done in the boiling water too. Throw in the odd mud pool and a sulphurous good time was had by all.

I am by this stage knackered but my day is not done. We have booked to go to the Tamaki Maori Village which recreates pre-european Maori life. OK jazzed up a bit so that tourists will like it and you get a Maori Concert and Hangi meal thrown in. Monst loves it, Cal loves it, I find bits fascinating but also have the nagging doubt that I have with all re-enactors ever since meeting the Brummy SS in Bury, what's in it for them. Still the food was good, the concert bit was fun if you liek that sort of thing but the village recreation for me at least gave me a glimpse into the past. We meet a crane driver from Perth in Oz, some Japanese tourists and a geezer and family who works in construction somewhere round Stratford. I struggle to keep my eyes open on the bus home so the communal singing does not sit well with me.

Napier and the Scary Ladies

From Rotorua, the next port of call is Napier, capital of Art Deco as a result of an earthquake in 1931. But we get to see that late in the day. We arrive around lunch time and Monst is determined she and Cal are gonna swim with a dolphin. Now the wild ones at the Bay of Islands sensibly hid. She has a plan though, at Napier there is Marineland, a place where the Dolphin can't escape. Actually it was OK not a bad place and the staff care deeply about their charges. I'm still not certain about dolphin shows though. The water despite wet suits (photos taken of Monst in rubber - had to be done, Ooh! Er! Mrs Mopp! If for no other reason for blackmail purposes!) Was apparently freezing. Me taking the pics didn't feel a thing. Both enjoyed the experience and Kelly the Dolphin suruvived it so that was cool.

Leave Marineland and go to the chippy. Eat Al Fresco (poor Al) and then back for the show. Actually this provided Cal who is an avowed lover of penguins the opportunity to have a photo taken with a little blue penguin. The penguin in question is named Alfred and is blind. Cal found out that Penguins are both soft and warm, Monst then repeated the experience. So there you go, cold hands, pick up-a-pick up a penguin!

Then I persuade them into town, much photos and both Monst and I come away slightly uneasy. Napier is lovely, the Art Deco is great but you have a feeling you are on a Hollywood set. Quick game of Mini Golf which Cal claims to win because he took more hits. I fail to put him right.

Dinner at a local Indian (I was hungry by then no thought of stomach safety but actually all was well). Then I'm sent out for a pint and to write the postcards. I head to the Sports Bar of the Blue Water where we're staying. I'm drinking Tui and writing postcards, the femaile bar staff are meanwhile smacking hell out of a puch bag machine, there is some sort of karaoke going on (no Nicola no reprise of 'Blockbuster') and 'Man I Feel Like a Woman' prompts table top dancing at which point it is noticed I'm writing postcards and I have the piss taken out of me (fair enough).

Back to the room and kip.

Not a Brainy Womble or a Boot

Head down State Highway 2 for the longest drive so far. Stop for Brekkie at the Paper Mulberry Cafe at Pukehou and very good it was too. Porridge, toast, nice cuban coffee (is Fidel out and about yet?) Then onwards. Arrive here at 3.00'ish, Monst hits the laundrette, Cal stays in the room, I head to the National Museum and blog at a cyber cafe. Cool, tomorrow the dreaded ferry. Will no doubt expand this bit when I get a chance and I have the map to remind me where we stopped.

Two stops, one because there was a kiddies slide made out of an old Harvard trainer which I had to stop to let Cal use. Well cool.

Second for lunch where we met a lovely couple who chatted away with us who have a son who lives in Earley (Reading - I was born in Reading because I was awkward and breach not my home town Wallingford and there is always a Reading connection somewhere, wherever I go!)

Half an Hour from an Hour Ago

Sunday and it's boys day, Cal and I repair to the swimming pool at Garston where we splash about a bit. Good exercise. Home via B&Q purveyors of fans to the not so gentry. We've been ordered to fetch a fan in anticipation of hot weather. We do so then to Borders where the Charlie George autobiography is purchased somewhat predictably.

Home and scones are the priority as Cal finds himslef scone maker by appointment to Faz ICU. Translates as him doing the weighing and supervisng me cooking!

Run ins over homework. Fetch Monst to work, finish the news, listen to the Rain Parade and sweat. Beer in the fridge beckons.....

Death by 100 Boxes

Today I should recieve 100 boxes of NHS Circulars, deep joy..... Where reform strikes in the NHS as a grey literature vulture there I shall feed. So as space is required at St Helens I get their circular collection to fill my gaps. Not got a clue where I'm gonna put it all while we sort it.

Good news from Sally so the positive vibes strategy yesterday obviously worked! Extremely pleased for her.

The boxes arrive, I observe library custom and practice and climb over the things. Probably not the wisest move in terms of health and safety but something we've always done given the opportunity, it's a hell of a lot cleaner to climb on your library than piss in the corner.

Speak to Marie who rngs to tell me to make the lads delivering the boxes a brew. Nice to chat.

Flee early, head to Cheshire Oaks for a pair of boots. Drop Nicola off in Ellesmere Port on the way. Fetch the boots which are a cunning plan for our trip to New Zealand. We are travelling with one bag between us so multiiple choice shoes are not an option. Result multi function boots are a good choice.

Giggle at an email I receive from the Learning and Development Bureau. No more will I be fed at induction sessions. Suits me means we do our stuff and bugger off. Laugh at the notion that I am no longer cost effective to feed! Very much a sign of the times.

Home and it's off to do the food shopping. Deep joy but Cal has played a blinder on being involved in the draughting of the shopping list. He's insisted beer is included! That's my boy! Grab an indian from the takeaway and am amazed to hear the Germany, Argentina result.

Put on Your Mourning Weeds

So I find myself second in the league on an equal number of points with the league leaders. Celebrate with a bottle of Bishop's Finger. Np to Asda before finding this out and fetch food for Cal's packed lunch. Why am I slightly disturbed at the cancelling of Top of the Pops? It's years since I watched the thing and when I did it was rare that it'd play anything I liked. I remember the dreadful Pan's People (and the discussion of them as 'birds' by my old fella) as my earliest memory of the thing, that and the Sweet performing 'Blockbuster' and Bowie playing 'Space Oddity', the dreadful dance troop that replaced Pan's People a period when the thing pretended to be party central and you hoped John Peel would be presenting it because he was at complete odds with the Beebs message back in the 80s. Mind you happy memories of the Bunnymen, Bis etc are there too. Truly a dreadful thing but we watched it religously and it's that residual part of me that feels discncerted by this news. Stoopid or what! Technorati Tags: , , ,

Fleece

Home and still to begin the tidy up. Zap up to Sainsbury's to fetch yogs for the boy. Bit of a major paddy from him tonight as Monst removes him from infront of the Playstation. Not quite a surgical removal but a great deal of shouting. She heads upstairs to calm him down and promptly falls asleep. Right time to get going my reward for job done a bottle of Golden Sheep from the Black Sheep Brewery. Technorati Tags: ; ;

End of the Day

So Arsenal win 2-1 and are into the next round, a few youngsters got a run out which is good. Monst makes contact with Alan, one of Cal's Godfathers who she went out to the first Gulf War with. They chat for ages on the phone and consequently feeding everyone and getting Monst to work is rushed. Standing family joke is they marched out to the war, I marched against it. Mind you I didn't know her at the time. Bottle of Firecrest, not my fave beer but adequate. Cal watches Star Wars and then heads to bed. Technorati Tags: ; ; ; ; ;

Thank You For the Days

Spend most of the day trying to sort a decent tag cloud for Exhibit B quite revealing in several respects. Move the cloud up and down and on and off the template like a whore's knickers. Try using anchors to sort an easy link, end up comprmising with text and an external page. Not what I wanted but illustrates some learning needs for me. Screams and the like. Plague everyone with questions and kind constructive advice flows from Tracy, Christina and Dave. Much appreciated. Also reveals that clouds aren't as intuitive as I think they are. Tag the latest Exhibit B and things are cool. Afternoon a call from Lisa who tells me of her new job over with Eileen as Clinical Librarian at Arrowe. This is very kind of her and I know she'll be cracking in the role. Think that Eileen's begining to develop a nice little team round her and I'm pleased for both of them. That's not to say that Sally who thought about it as a job wouldn't have done an equally good job, I'm convinced she would have and would have been a similar asset to the crew over there. Home, feed myself 'cos Cal and Monst were off to the pictures after school with Helen and Lonen. Open a bottle of Broadside and veg infront of the TV. Play with my own template as I wait for the folks. Technorati Tags: ; ; ; ;

Lose the Decs, Boy

Spend the day losing the decs around the place. Need to take them up to the loft yet, not my fave place to be. So tomorrow, Monst can step the ladder and I can panic up in the rafters. Good preparation for Sweeney Todd! Monst in work again tonight and for the first time over the holidays I need to take her in. It's been great her jumping cabs to work, nice just to be able to sit back and relax. Still wind down tonight with a bottle of Young's Special London Ale as I finish the formatting of the last three day's news. Watch as I do stuff, 'Catch Me if You Can' which I suprise myself by enjoying. Technorati Tags: ;

Kip Master General

Cal kips post afternoon out with Sam, which has benefits for me, no need to take Monst to work (she jumps a cab) and a full watch of Scrappy Races. Class act with continued builds at the race sites. Excellent blend of build and action. Second plus is I can have a beer in total peace, earlier which means I can slip in a second with no effort. Cool. Follow this with a long, lonely hot bath and my night is a big success.

GMT and Nectar Points

Hooray for GMT and 200 points lager. Mental note, points on lager justifies drinking the muck... points mean proper beer come Christmas. You can tell how bad it is on the basis I always check the alcohol content of the stuff before buying it. I generally don't give a toss with bitter. On the downside of the beer situation at Crimble is that the selection at Sainsbury's don't contain enough Young's stuff so I'll end up making weight on Fullers and giving a full reign to my Wychwood obsessions. Hope Wychwood do a good distribution on the Brakspear's now it's gone their way might even get a civilised pint up in this part of the world.

Library Open Day

Heavy day tomorrow, need to sort the flyers (need to set Tracy on it early 'cos I doubt Clair got round to it, although if she did great) for this 'ere library open day. Must chase up what's happening about the 60 Hope Street deal. Have to sort out SLA and details of Postrgrad for Diane, ring David and find out what he's after and sort out what the **** we're up to with this open day. Must ask Clair about the TUC learning rep business too. All this in a day shrunk by the fact that Cally needs dropping at school (er...hang on a mo, must dump the Harvest festival stuff in the car) and the fact I need to pick him up from school so he can be used as a junior dartboard for his MMR and polio jabs.

On top of all this it's Sunday night, I can't sleep, know I'll end up watching the "Wild Geese" which I'll find awful but it's on. Still I'm stoking up the Hefner as I type this so life ain't that bad and reaching for another dodgy Peroni lager, oh the points at Sainsbury's..... Shower is also on the agenda, shave and iron the clothes for the morning. More later if I get the urge.
